<image:title>John's Blog - Thoughts on Walking - Chesters Roman Fort</image:title>
<image:caption>My favorite fort was Chesters Roman Fort. That’s probably because it was one of the first forts we really explored. Shawn and Monica had been there before, and Shawn was helpful sharing the highlights. The museum was fascinating, but the baths by the river were the centerpiece of the site. It had been a long day, my feet were tired, and when Shawn and I sat among the stones that had been the foundation works of the Roman baths, I imagined many a tired soldier sitting in the same spot amidst the soothing waters of the bath relaxing tired muscles. We lacked the steam and the water of the baths, but we sat on the same stones, we had the warmth of the late afternoon sun, and the delight of the River Tyne slowly passing by. I sat there laughing and joking with my friend and walking companion, just as many a Roman soldier had done nearly 1,900 years ago. The baths seemed to still hold their magic after all these years.</image:caption>

<image:title>John's Blog - Thoughts on Walking - Lesson #4 Guys’ Trips to the Whites and the Greens</image:title>
<image:caption>Summer Trips—For several years, there were annual trips with Shawn and and my older son, Ben, to New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Summer hikes up Mounts Jackson, Eisenhower, and Liberty were combined with an annual Allman Brothers Band concert in Gilford. We even ventured into the Green Mountains of Vermont while Ben was a student at Middlebury College for a trek up the distinctive Camel’s Hump. Another hiking trio had formed. These trips were different not because we were doing anything more dramatic or physically challenging, but being three guys, we had an edgier social dynamic and looked at hiking a bit more aggressively.</image:caption>

      <image:title>John's Blog - Thoughts on Walking</image:title>
<image:caption>Crossing Katahdin’s “Tablelands” always makes me think of Donn Fendler, who got separated from his companions as a young boy in 1939 and spent nine days alone “Lost on a Mountain in Maine.” I had the pleasure of meeting Donn a couple of times before he passed away in 2016. I listened to him share his story with school children, and I watched the twinkle in his eyes as he answered their myriad questions. His misadventure became a key part of his life story, and he shared it over and over. While I don’t wish to suffer Donn’s childhood ordeal, listening to Donn I realized that my time on Katahdin and in the Maine woods comprises an important part of my life story as well. It became important to share it with my children. When Ben and I took Emily to Chimney Pond with the idea of hiking up to Baxter Peak, she wasn’t sure she was up for it. As we ate lunch by the glacial tarn nestled into the arms of Katahdin, she saw hikers climbing up the Cathedral Trail—Baxter’s steepest trail. “Could we give that a try?” she asked. We made it to Baxter Peak, across the Knife Edge to Pamola and back down the Helon Taylor Trail to end a fantastic day.</image:caption>

<image:title>John's Blog - Thoughts on Walking - Taking the train out of the city felt like cheating, but we read that the first 10 miles were through industrial zones and less-than-appealing urban sprawl. And besides, from the cathedral is was over 30 miles to our first inn. The train ride would bring it down to under 20 miles, a much more doable first day of walking. Leaving the train station we took a wrong turn and spent the first hour quite lost. We knew the general direction to go, so we went that way. Eventually we found the first of many Camino signs. Relieved to finally be on the trail, I had Ben pose beside the sign. We were now, finally, walking the Caminho, as it’s called in Portugal.</image:title>

After ISON, which the media had highly promoted only to see it dissolve away by the forces of the solar wind, no one was going to promote a comet that had no hope of being bright. Lovejoy c/2013 quietly made it round the buoy of the Sun and then faded away as it withdrew.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Comet’s, as I pointed out earlier, are named for their discoverers. Here we see another comet discovered by Terry Lovejoy, a distinguished astro-photographer who has discovered six comets as of 2020. While my cometary photography pales compared to his, this is my image of Lovejoy c/2014 Q2 passing by the Pleiades with a tail that I couldn’t see with my eyes, but came through in the photograph.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Rosetta Probe reached Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko in May 2014, went into orbit about the nucleus of the comet in August, and in November soft-landed (sort of) the Philae Lander on the surface of the nucleus. Rosetta gave us the most detailed images of a comet’s nucleus ever taken. Boulders, cliffs, and jets of sublimating ices were photographed in detail. Analysis of the water composition found the ratio of deuterium to hydrogen in the water from the comet to be three times that found for terrestrial water which suggests that Earth’s oceans were not derived from comets such as this one. The Philae Lander bounced twice upon landing before finally settling in a shadowed area beneath a cliff face. Without solar power the probe only operated for 2-3 days. <image:title>John's Blog - Halley to NEOWISE - 2020 NEOWISE</image:title>
<image:caption>The summer of 2020 was graced with the unexpected beauty of Comet NEOWISE. NEOWISE is an acronym for NASA's Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission, a space probe built to detect asteroids along with the occasional comet. NEOWISE discovered the comet on March 27, 2020. At first it was much like several other faint 2020 comets such as Atlas or c/2017 T2 PanSTARRS, but that began to change in June and came to full fruition in July. Because comets are named for their discoverers, this comet was named for a space probe mission, NEOWISE.</image:caption>

      <image:title>John's Blog - Halley to NEOWISE</image:title>
<image:caption>In July I was doing photography for the Maine International Film Festival. The entire festival was being held at the Skowhegan Drive-In due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. It was an interesting festival to shoot, everything happened outdoors, everyone was wearing masks and doing their best to practice social distancing. Since Covid had first hit in mid-March there had been several faint comets in the skies overhead, all so dim they all required a telescope to see. Within the astronomical community a prediction arose that the latest of these comets, Comet NEOWISE, promised to become bright and visible to the unaided eye. That would an exciting development. Perhaps I could a get a photo of the comet in the context of the film festival?</image:caption>

      <image:title>John's Blog - Halley to NEOWISE - 1996, Hyakutake, Fairfield, Maine</image:title>
<image:caption>This was my first sighting of comet with a long, clearly visible tail. This was the best comet I had ever seen at that point in my life. After the smudge of Comet Halley, Hyakutake had a visible tail that I measured as 17° long. The first time I saw it the comet was telescopic, little more than the familiar expected smudge, much like the earlier comets I had seen. The tail was supposed to be visible, but it was low in the northeastern sky. If I wanted any hope of spying the tail I would have to get up at 3:30 a.m. when it would be near the zenith. So I set my alarm for 3:30 on the morning of March 24, 1996.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The local TV station wanted an interview, there was a newspaper reporter who wanted to interview me. Could I speak to the Rotary, the Kawanas, the Lion’s Club? I had to study up a bit to expand my cursory understanding of comets, and I had to do it quickly. Luckily, it was a fascinating assignment. The interviews and speaking engagements went fine. The people of The County were curious and wanted to know more. They wanted to see this famous sky wanderer and I was expected to be their guide. I realized that I had to get it right and I had to step up and help people learn to see, to understand, and to be inspired. When I thought about it, that is exactly what I loved about teaching in the planetarium, and now more than ever the public and students of The County were actively seeking it out.</image:caption>

<image:title>John's Blog - Halley to NEOWISE - Cometary orbits tend to be highly elliptical with t he tail longest when it’s closest to the Sun.</image:title>
<image:caption>In January 1986 Comet Halley disappeared behind the Sun. If Earth had been at a different spot in its orbit so we could have seen it when the comet was at perihelion, the tail would have been impressive indeed, much like Clara remembered from 1910. It reappeared from behind Sol in March. The comet was supposed to be a bit brighter, but the apparition would no longer be in the evening sky, it would be in the early pre-dawn skies. On the new Moon that month we held our “Hard-core Halley Watch” starting at 3 AM. Clara was the first to sign up, she wanted to be there. So I picked her up at 2:30 that morning. She took her look at the comet through the telescope, then went inside to her comfy chair and told her story numerous times until the Sun peaked over the spruces at the edge of the field across the road.. Over 100 people showed up for the event and everyone was excited to see their favorite smudge in the sky one more time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>John's Blog - Halley to NEOWISE - 2020 c/2017 T2 PanSTARRS</image:title>
<image:caption>Comet c/2017 T2 PanSTARRS passed near the galaxies M-81 and M-82 in Ursa Major. Always a fine sight, these two galaxies are favorites for many amateur observers. For a couple of days in May 2020 there appeared to be three, but in reality the third was a much much closer and much much smaller solar system object. I like these conjunctions of sky objects because they illustrate that while in a telescope they look much the same, it’s through the works of astronomers and scientists such as Edmund Halley, Johannes Kepler, William Hereschel, Joseph Fraunhofer, Robert Kirchhoff, Edwin Hubble, Fred Whipple, and Carl Sagan, among many others, that we have discovered that there’s more to these smudges than meets the eye. Interestingly, the Messier Catalogue of objects arose to distinguish deep sky objects (galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae) from the comets that Charles Messier was looking for in the 18th century. I thank these scientists for their contributions so that we have a better understanding today. This is the true intersection between human events and comets, perhaps an omen of further and deeper understanding to come.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The challenge was to make this pre-recorded show work within our 24’ tilted dome which featured 12 Ektagraphic III slide projectors and about 20 special effect projectors along with our Spitz Nova star projector. Everything was operated manually from our console which consisted of remote slide projector controls, dimmers, on-off switches and a 12 volt system for small motors and special effects lamps. This was before computerization and digital projectors, at least in domes with as small a budget as mine. I masked slides with opaquing ink and mylar tape and mounted them in glass Wess mounts. We built special effects with small motors, baby food jars and glass pepsi bottles (remember how the glass of those Pepsi bottles had swirl pattern, great for a nebula effect), flashlight bulbs, old film-strip projectors, and if we got ambitious perhaps a helium-neon laser. To make a long story short, I combined the two shows into one and it became one of our most popular public presentations ever.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 1999 the Stardust Probe was launched and in 2004 it flew through the tail of Comet Wild 2 collecting particles in a sheet of exposed aerogel—one of the lowest density and lightest solid materials known, looking much like clear Jello, but with a consistency more like firm styrofoam. Here we see particles embedded in the aerogel. Once the passage through the tail was complete, the aerogel was covered to protect the contents from interplanetary contamination, then the probe returned the collection of tiny particles back to Earth in 2006 to be examined. <image:caption>The explosions happened just around the limb of the planet, but as Jupiter rotated the impact sites came into view and appeared as dark spots. These scars could more readily be observed and lasted for several months after the event. This image was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. It was a huge news item. Could a comet hit Earth? Yes. Is a comet likely to hit Earth soon? No. How can dirty snowballs make such big explosions? Speed and size. Can we see the explosions with our eyes? No. Are there pictures? Yes. And why is it number 9 when there were 20 pieces? It was the ninth comet that Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy had found together. And so the questions went . . . . <image:caption>I had been working and teaching in planetariums since 1979 when I was the student director of the University of Maine Planetarium. In the autumn of 1983 I moved to northern Maine to become the director of the Francis Malcolm Science Center Planetarium upon its opening that fall. Two years later, in the fall of 1985, I found myself as the county’s expert on comets. The planetarium was the center of astronomy education in Aroostook County (which is locally known as simply “The County”), and since the planetarium was basically a one-man operation, that meant I was the local expert.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I never saw this comet, but I talked about it a lot under the planetarium dome. In July 1994 Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashed into Jupiter creating large dark spots where the more than 20 pieces to this comet exploded upon impact. It was in pieces as a result of passing too close to Jupiter two years earlier. The giant planet’s gravitational forces tore it apart. In 1994 the pieces collided one after another into Jupiter. The largest impact site occurred on July 18 when fragment G struck Jupiter. The dark spot created by the G fragment measured over 7,500 miles across, and was estimated to have released an energy equivalent to 6,000,000 megatons of TNT, that’s 600 times the world's nuclear arsenal at the time. <image:caption>We had a several telescopes at the Science Center and we used them for comet viewing after every planetarium show when the skies were clear. I remember this one potato farmer from Washburn looked at the comet through the telescope, “That’s it?” he asked, “I drove 35 miles to see a smudge of light?” “I’m afraid so,” I answered, “come back next week, it might be brighter and we might see a tail developing,” With a wry smile he replied “I’ll think about it,” as he gathered his daughter and headed out. I thought I’d seen the end of that family. But I was wrong.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The clouds took over. Teaching myself how to paint was beginning to show the limits of my knowledge. There are many good reasons to take lessons, like not having to reinvent the wheel. Here, I was trying to discover how to make the paint more translucent, so I added white—that’s not how you do it. White actually adds opacity to paint. Duh. I needed to do some reading, consult my painting friends and family, and perhaps even watch instructional YouTube videos (god forbid!).</image:caption>

      <image:title>John's Blog - A Painting Lesson from a Volcano - Taormina and Etna #2</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my second attempt at this scene. I purposefully painted it quickly, trying to simplify the detail, adding energy instead. Sometimes when I draw quickly, I capture something deeper than the surface detail that I so easily get lost in. This painting from start to finish was done in a couple of hours. I finished it and immediately saw more I could do, but I stopped myself. Let it be what it is. The only thing I added was my signature.</image:caption>

      <image:title>John's Blog - A Painting Lesson from a Volcano - Visiting Mount Etna</image:title>
<image:caption>We visited 25-year-old lava flows, spelunked into a lava tube, and climbed the rim of an old side vent. We heard stories about past eruptions, a bit of the science of vulcanology, and the lore of Vulcan from Greco-Roman mythology. I also recalled tales of Pele from my visit to Hawaii. I knew that below our feet was magma, and it’s not that far away. Vulcan or Pele, whomever you attribute such events to, could take us out at a moments notice. Remember Pompeii?</image:caption>

      <image:title>John's Blog - A Painting Lesson from a Volcano - The Flying Saucer Cloud</image:title>
<image:caption>This giant cloud lasted all day, constantly changing yet retaining its basic form, slowly undulating and shifting as if were alive. Clouds like this are called lenticular clouds. They are created by moist stable air flowing over a mountain or range of peaks, then the moisture condenses just downwind of the mountains. I took lots of photos. I knew that this cloud would be in my first painting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Video - Constellation Charades, Constellation Mysteries</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a series of videos called Constellation Charades for grades 4-8 and Constellation Mysteries for grades 1-3. Each video leads students through an art activity in which they will draw a constellation without knowing which one it is. Part of the mystery is to see if the students can guess the constellation before it's completed. John will lead this activity that will also include some interesting facts and trivia about the constellation and the stars that comprise it. This is meant to be an activity where the viewer is actively taking part by drawing along with John, pausing the video as need be to complete the drawing. This is an ongoing series and new constellations will be added to the current set every couple of weeks. Produced by John Meader and Northern Stars Planetarium, © 2020</image:caption>

<image:caption>From the moment I heard the Rolling Stone’s “Satisfaction” on the radio, it was all over. As a kid growing up in Central Maine the lyrics didn’t draw me in. It was the sound of Keith Richards’ guitar that blew me away. Sublime distortion and resonance atop a killer hook. Music became a near obsession, then an identity. It has since evolved into a creative and philosophical outlet. In 2001 I was introduced to my first Digital Audio Workstation. A software package running on a laptop, along with an inexpensive MIDI keyboard, democratized music creation. After ineffectually pushing around notes in a sequencer window for a few months it all came together at a Moby concert when I realized, “I can do this, too.” Add in a few odds and ends of recording gear and the rest is history. Rock, blues, funk, jazz, roots music, African rhythms, and the myriad flavors of electronica are ingredients in a lively and ever-evolving gumbo. As are the sounds around us all day long; they contain no story but can connect with us as deeply as music. Corny as it might sound, my playlist is life. One of the great blessings of my life was meeting John Meader. From at least high school we listened to music together, exchanging albums and pouring through record store racks. Then I went off to become an engineer, and he went off to become a folklorist and astronomer. We have continued to share a passion for music and the arts. And for canoeing; don’t forget canoeing! Through the years our lives periodically intersect, and each time it’s like we’re picking up the conversation from where we last left off. I’m excited about this latest intersection – embodied in this website – and I look forward to sharing with you examples of my creative work and interests along with collaborative works with John.</image:caption>

      <image:title>John Meader - John Meader jtmeader@northernstarsplanetarium.com</image:title>
<image:caption>I grew up drawing pictures, carving chunks of pine, and loving art. Inspired by my sixth grade teacher, Carol Robinson Morin, who nurtured my artistic bend. She introduced me to Leonardo, Van Eyck, Monet, and Van Gogh. I carried that inspiration through many iterations as a teen. I started taking photographs in 1978 on a cross country trip. Attempting to capture something more than a snapshot quickly became the aim of every shot. Though most of my images never reached that lofty goal, it became the reason to take pictures. Inspiration came quickly from my photographic heroes: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ansel Adams, Todd Webb, Elliott Porter, Patrick Groleau, and Neil Parent—to name a few. It's not easy to get a good photograph, but it's rewarding when you hit the mark. To me, the greatest value in this endeavor is the process of learning to see, learning to anticipate, and putting myself in interesting places. I've learned you don't need to visit Yellowstone to get a great photo, you just need to open your eyes to what's around you where ever you are. It takes practice, and that's the joy of photography. Today, I continue to explore all these creative endeavors. I seem to have a muse that demands that I draw, paint, carve, and photograph my interpretations of the world and the universe. This website is an outlet to share my expressions of art. I am honored to share this space with Shawn Burke, one of my oldest and dearest friends. Shawn and I met in 6th grade, but became fast friends in high school. Despite our paths taking us geographically apart—he to Princeton, me to U Maine—our friendship has held fast. We continually grow and explore new places and ideas together, whether on wilderness canoe trips or through sharing music, art, and having long philosophical conversations over a dram or two of scotch. Our creative talents compliment each other well and occasionally combine in fascinating collaborations.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Milky Way - 2. A Critique: My First Milky Way Shot August 5, 2013</image:title>
<image:caption>This was my first attempt at shooting the Milky Way. I look at it now and I had a few things right. I like the composition idea, Miller Tower on the left, Johnson Pond at the bottom for a reflection, and the Milky Way on the right. Good idea. A few problems, number one is the amount of light pollution, both the light from the library tower and the distant lights of Waterville seen over the horizon. I was fortunate that the Milky Way even showed up at all. The tower and its reflection need a much faster shutter speed to make them look like they do to the eye, they’re both washed out. The tower’s reflection is cropped off, and it would have been nice to capture a reflection of the Milky Way too, though the light pollution would probably hinder that.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Milky Way - A friend challenged me to look at the night sky differently. He suggested that some night when the sky was clear to go out and observe. Find a spot where you can see as much of the sky as possible, then lie flat on the ground—use a blanket perhaps to guard against ticks—and feel the Earth at your back. Look up at the sky, the stars, the Milky Way. Get comfortable, take a deep breath, then change your perspective. Consider that you’re lying on a very large sphere. The whole Earth is behind you, think about that, the whole Earth is behind you. Now look at the Milky Way, look towards the galactic center near Sagittarius and consider that you’re not looking up at it, but looking down into it. You are on a giant sphere that revolves around a star that revolves around that galactic center. If the Sun suddenly stopped revolving around the galaxy—don’t worry, it won’t do that—the immense gravity of the galactic core would pull us in, we would fall down into the Milky Way’s core. Let go of the ego-centric perspective and look down into that core. Suddenly, the universe gets a whole lot bigger and you are in a unique position, you are exactly between the solid surface of Earth and the greater cosmos. Hold that feeling and see where it takes you.</image:title>

<image:title>The Milky Way - Camera. This seems obvious, but you need a camera that captures images well in low light. Modern cameras are much better at this than they were even just a few years ago. For a while this was strictly the domain of DSLR cameras, but with the development of mirrorless cameras that has changed. Today, people are also doing surprisingly well even with cell phones. My experience is completely with DSLR cameras, so that’s what I’ll be talking about, though most of this also applies toward mirrorless cameras as well. Wide Angle Lens. For Milky Way photography a wide angle lens has great advantages. First, the Milky Way is a large extended sky object so you need the wide angle point of view to capture as much of it in your frame as possible. Second, the wider the angle, the longer your exposure can be before you start to capture star trails. Star trails are the stars apparent motion across the sky due to Earth’s rotation. I usually shoot with a 14mm lens. The rule of 500 states if you divide 500 by the focal length of your lens it will give you the length of exposure in seconds you can shoot before the stars start to trail and become elongated. If you shoot with a 50mm lens, then 500/50=10 seconds. If you shoot with a 14mm lens, then 500/14= 35.7 seconds. Since I usually shoot with a 14mm lens and my camera’s longest pre-timed exposure is 30 seconds, I seldom shoot longer than that. Lens Speed. A faster lens with a low f/stop will give you the most light, which you need because you’re shooting in the dark. The lower the f/ratio, the bigger the aperture, which means more light. My 14mm lens wide open is f/2.8.</image:title>

      <image:title>The Milky Way - 6. A Second Critique: My First Shot Reinterpreted</image:title>
<image:caption>What can you do with Photoshop? What should you do with Photoshop? It’s powerful software which is the modern equivalent of a darkroom. Dodging and burning, adjusting brightness and contrast, and much more can be accomplished. You can combine photos, and create new composite images. For example, without going to Colby to reshoot my first Milky Way again—I may still do that—I reworked the original with stronger Photoshop skills than I had in 2013. I extended Johnson Pond. I grabbed another image of Miller Tower and super-imposed it over the blown-out tower, then blended them together. Then I grabbed the Milky Way from one of the better photos shown above and replaced the original sky. I added a hint of sky reflection to the pond. I desaturated the green of the lawn. Then with some masking, and blending, adjusting contrasts, along with a healthy dose of just experimenting and playing around, I came up with this image. It is a composite image made from other images, yet as artificial as it sounds, this is much closer to what I saw that night in 2013 as I stood beside my camera and took that original shot. So does that make it less real than the original?</image:caption>
